Chalk Allowance for Teachers—DepEd

The teachers insisted chalk is among the essential things in teaching students. The group further requested an additional budget from Php700 million up to Php1 billion as annual budget. Because of this, some teachers and civil society groups, who are appealing for higher budget allocation for education, will show up some force in congress on budget deliberations.

Teachers press chalk allowance campaign with a dance

TEACHERS belonging to the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) staged a “Chalk Dance” to dramatize their demand for a P2,000 yearly chalk allowance, even if the Education department is set to increase the present P700 allowance to P1,000 next year.

To the tune of “Achy Breaky Chalk” (a play of the Acky Breaky Heart), teachers from various public schools danced their protest at the Quezon Memorial Circle Sunday morning two days after they launched the National Chalk Holiday.

Last February 7, Palatino co-authored House Bill 4134 filed by ACT Teachers party-list Representative Antonio Tinio seeking an increase for the yearly chalk allowance of public school teachers to 2,000.

Tinio said the increase proposed by Luistro is not enough.

“We welcomed the DepEd proposal but the increase is not enough. We will continue to work with them and the Committee on Appropriations to augment the chalk allowance,” Tinio said, adding “the National Government must put an end to our public school teachers’ long-standing burden of providing teaching supplies out of their own pockets.”
